In a cohort of 260 children followed up for 10 years from birth, the environmental exposure to -glucans did not increase the risk for bronchial asthma, bronchial hyperreactivity or allergic sensitisation.49 One epidemiological study showed that long-term and massive exposure to organic dust (containing high concentration of -glucans) may cause disruption of normal immune response and allow the development of various immunopathological conditions.47 High level of -glucans in the environment is the risk factor for allergic sensitisation50 and airway inflammation.51 Organic dust also contains the polysaccharide chitin, which is usually associated with the presence of -glucans
